From DIY Plumber to Business Book Awards: My Journey of Self-Development

As a confessed self-development junkie, my journey began unexpectedly.
Years ago, a plumber came around to put some tiles in my mum’s bathroom and overpriced the job. Instead of accepting the quote, I took out a couple of books from the library and grabbed a leaflet from B&Q (no internet at the time!) and figured it out myself.

That simple act of learning sparked a drive in me to take control of my own growth.

From there, I became a manager at an optician in Kensington and borrowed as many books as I could to learn about management and leadership. It’s been an incredible ride — starting with audiobooks from Brian Tracy and Zig Ziglar and progressing to life-changing reads like Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

📚 Books have always been my mentors — unlocking potential, inspiring action, and transforming how I view business and leadership.

While not all the answers are on the internet, I’ve found that mentorship — whether through podcasts, books, or personal relationships — remains the best way to progress and move the dial in life.

Currently, I’m reading How to Be Smart with Your Time by Duncan Valentine, and it’s already packed with practical insights I’ve started implementing.

Who is a optician and really goos at social media?

Mastering Self-Marketing: The Ultimate Game Changer

Mastering the art of self-marketing is like unlocking the secret ingredient for success in today’s fast-moving world. In a landscape full of noise and competition, standing out is not just beneficial — it’s essential.

Why Self-Marketing Starts With Personal Branding

At its core, self-marketing is about personal branding. Just like top companies create distinct identities, individuals must do the same. Understanding your strengths, values, and unique proposition helps you build a brand that resonates.

As a result, people begin to remember you — not just for what you do, but how you do it.

Digital Platforms Are Your New Stage

In today’s digital era, social media platforms offer unlimited reach. Whether you’re storytelling on Instagram, networking on LinkedIn, or posting expertise on YouTube — the opportunity is massive.

Moreover, self-marketing puts you in the driver’s seat. No longer do you need to rely only on job ads or cold calls — your content attracts opportunities.

Growth Through Visibility and Authenticity

Mastering this skill doesn’t just build your brand — it forces you to evolve. To stay relevant, you need to keep learning, keep improving, and most importantly, stay authentic.

While promoting your wins matters, building meaningful relationships is key. In fact, audiences trust those who are consistent and real.

The takeaway? Be visible, be valuable, and be human.
