How Pokemon Go is affecting Social Media, and what can we learn from it?
So unless you’ve been hiding under a rock recently, you would have heard that Niantic in partnership with Nintendo has recently released Pokemon Go! which allows Pokemon lovers and novices alike to fulfil their dreams of becoming a Pokemon master and to catch ‘em all!
Pokemon Go! is a game that encourages people to leave their homes and engage with other players and friends to collect Pokemon, build up their Pokedex and make new friends! A brilliant way to get people engaging with each other in the real world! But is Pokemon Go affecting Social Media?
The effect that this app has had on social media is two fold! Already Pokemon GO’s daily user count has surpassed that of Twitter, while time spent in the game now exceeds the equivalent spent on YouTube, Instagram Facebook or WhatsApp and this is in the space of a few short days.
Now the question is, how can we apply the strategies of Pokemon Go to us Social Media managers?
Firstly, like anyone going on an adventure, we need to equip ourselves with the best equipment in order to succeed. In Pokemon go this would be having Pokeballs and incense but for the social media expert this would be using programmes such as
Tweetdeck – this nifty programme allows you to keep track of various twitter platforms, it also allows you to schedule tweets even when you’re out of the office!
Facebook posting tools – This is a fantastic way to ensure that you have weeks worth of content to post automatically for when you want it so you have more time to interact with your customers and clients!
Later – This is another post scheduling app but for Instagram! Instagram is a growing platform and is a fun way to get your message across without using very many words!
Secondly, gaining followers is a bit like catching new Pokemon! If you have played the game then you will be aware how hard it is sometimes to get the right angle to catch the highly sought after Pokemon and even when you have caught it, they can get away! In the game there are certain tactics we use to ensure secure capture of our Pokemon and this also can be applied to gaining new followers on your social media platforms! Some strategies you can implement are
– Publishing regular content, we as a society get bored very
– Using photos is always important, we are visual creatures!!
– Hosting giveaways because everyone loves free stuff!
Lastly, the more you train the better you will be. In order to level up in the game you have to gain experience and the same applies to your social media.
– You have to figure out what is best for your business,
– You need to check the analytics of your page to see when your page receives the most traffic,
People check their social media platforms as if its the morning paper or before they go to bed and this is when you need to make sure your posts stand out from the rest! So Pokemon Go is affecting Social Media, but do you think it is a positive or negative change?
What strategies have worked for you? Let us know in the comments we would love to hear from you!!!
