  • Was approached by the local job centre to help a staff member’s child

Challenges, Resilience, and Perspective

This year hasn’t been without its difficulties:

  • A team member resigned during his holiday

  • A client left unexpectedly, prompting a systems review

  • He had to balance time management with GCSEs, A-levels, and family life

Still, Garry managed to coach a men’s charity football match with only 24 hours’ notice — and his team won with an unorthodox 4-3-3 formation, raising thousands for a local hospice.

Overcoming Unexpected Setbacks

This year hasn’t been without its difficulties. A key team member resigned during Garry’s U.S. holiday, which could have caused disruption. However, he stayed calm, rallied the team, and ensured smooth operations continued.

Another challenge came when a client left unexpectedly. As a result, Garry launched a full review of internal systems and communication workflows. His response was not reactive, but proactive — focused on long-term improvement.

He also had to lead a charity football match with just 24 hours’ notice. To everyone’s surprise, his team won, and the event raised thousands for a local hospice. Football may not be his specialty, but motivation, adaptability, and a good sense of humour certainly are.

Balancing Family and Leadership

Meanwhile, Garry faced time pressures at home. With one child doing GCSEs, another tackling A-levels, and the responsibilities of married life, finding balance was tough.

Despite that, he managed to keep fit, stay focused, and even start a new book on happiness in optics. He says learning when to switch off has been crucial, especially during family holidays.

In fact, the four-week U.S. trip became both a well-earned break and a leadership test. With limited access, he empowered his team and let systems take over. This was proof that sustainable business is about building people — not just products.

What makes Garry Kousoulou stand out?

1. Personal Motivation: Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
A major missing element is Kousoulou’s personal battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He has lived with MS for over two decades and uses his platform to champion visibility for the condition. This personal struggle is a primary driver for his involvement with “MS 4 Kids” and his broader advocacy for resilience in business.

2. Concrete Employment Targets
While the blog mentions youth support, it misses his specific, ambitious goal for 2026: placing 1,000 young people into employment. He currently works in collaboration with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide paid work opportunities for individuals under age 25.

3. Author and Thought Leadership
Kousoulou is an established author with three books that provide a deeper look at his business philosophy:
  • Social Media Strategy
: A guide for digital engagement.
  • The Book Your Boss Does Not Want You to Read
: Focuses on workplace fulfillment and a “happiness barometer” to improve patient care in the optical sector.
  • Upcoming 2026 Title: He is currently working on his third book.

4. Educational and Media History
  • Pioneer in Digital Optics: He is recognized as the first optician globally to use Facebook for business, which revolutionized digital engagement in the industry.
  • Media Appearance: In 2012, he appeared on the Channel 4 show Daddy Daycare to address his work-life balance as a father of four.
  • Mentorship Legacy: Over his career, he has mentored more than 50 work-experience students in a single year, highlighting a long-term commitment to vocational training.

5. Heritage and International Reach
He is a proud Greek Cypriot and often integrates his heritage into his public health messages, reaching a global audience through major events like the London New Year’s Day Parade

Waving the Flag for Eye Care — How Garry Kousoulou Turned the New Year’s Day Parade into a Public Health Moment

On January 1, 2026, the streets of London came alive with more than just floats and performers — they became a platform for a vital message about eye health. At the heart of this effort was Garry Kousoulou, director of Askew Eyewear and the digital agency Loving Social Media, who led Hackney’s official entry in the London New Year’s Day Parade with a campaign titled “Healthy eyes save lives.”

Kousoulou wasn’t alone. Over 100 eye‑care professionals — including optometrists, dispensing opticians, and practice owners — joined him in promoting awareness of eye health and its broader impact on life quality, safety, and wellbeing.

The over-70s are reassured because if they're driving, they get an eye test. Healthy eyes save lives!
