Marketing & social media for opticians, by an optician
We're out there championing eyecare, not just posting about it
From practice visits to marching through London with eye charts, this is who you'd be working with. We bring the same energy, and the same optical knowledge, to your practice.
Can you spot the number hidden in a 109-year-old eye test? Keep scrolling to find out ↓

A different frame for every occasion. We walk the walk.
We talk a lot about promoting second pairs: prescription sunglasses, computer glasses, a statement frame for the weekend. Garry lives it, with a frame for every mood and moment. Does your team? Patients notice what you wear, so we help your whole team walk the walk too.

Marketing for Opticians: You Do the Eyecare. We Fill the Diary.
Buy back your time. We bring in new patients, keep your loyal ones coming back and train your team in shop-floor advocacy, so you can get on with the work you love. Built by an optician, not a generalist agency.

109 years of finding colour vision deficiency. Now you have something to offer.
Around 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have a colour vision deficiency. Colour-enhancing lenses can help many of them see colours more vividly. That's a story that delights patients, and a niche most practices never market.
It’s 12. This is the demonstration plate, so almost everyone can see it. The real test plates hide numbers that people with a red-green colour vision deficiency can’t see, which is why a proper eye examination matters.
Can you spot the number? Colour-enhancing lenses don't cure colour vision deficiency, and results vary from person to person. Why marketing eyecare matters
Dates for your diary
Marketing for opticians runs on a calendar
The best optical marketing is planned around the moments patients are already talking about. Here are the key eye health awareness days and industry dates we plan your content around.
100% Optical
ExCeL London. Come and say hello.
World Glaucoma Week
Remind patients why the pressure test matters.
World Optometry Day
Celebrate your clinicians and what they do.
Macular Week
AMD awareness and the value of OCT.
Summer sun season
UV protection and prescription sunglasses.
Back-to-school checks
Children’s eye tests and myopia management.
Colour Blind Awareness Day
1 in 12 men. Who in your area knows you can help?
National Eye Health Week
The biggest week in the UK eye health calendar.
World Sight Day
The global moment for eye health.
Diabetes Awareness Month
Diabetic eye checks and why they can’t wait.
Your list of priorities
What matters most in your practice?
Ask any practitioner and you'll hear the same list. Every one of them matters. And every one of them goes unnoticed if you don't market it properly.
A motivated team
Your team are brilliant with patients. But do local people know who they are?
The best frames
You chose every collection with care. Who outside the practice has seen them?
The latest equipment
OCT, myopia management, dry eye technology. A big investment that patients only value when they understand it.
Clinical excellence
Years of training and careful care. Invisible to the person scrolling past on their phone.
When did you last do a stock check?
Every frame on your shelf is money you've already spent. Slow-moving and aged stock quietly ties up cash, and it’s easy to let months slip by without counting it. We help you spot what isn't moving and turn it into campaigns, from frame-of-the-week posts to second-pair promotions, so your shelves earn their keep.
Work out what your shelves are worth ↓What’s the stock on your shelves worth?
Put in your own numbers. It takes 20 seconds and nothing is sent anywhere.
Example figures are filled in to start. This is a quick illustration, not an accounting valuation.
Money matters
Great marketing is wasted if the numbers behind it leak.
Garry built his own practice by watching the numbers as closely as the patient experience. Three questions we ask every practice owner:
When did you last reprice your old frames?
Frames that have sat on the shop floor for years were bought at yesterday's prices. Replacing them today costs more, so if they're still ticketed at the old price, inflation is quietly eating your margin. Reprice them, or turn them into a campaign and free up the cash.
Is your VAT apportioned the optical way?
A pair of glasses is two supplies: the frames and lenses are standard-rated, while the dispensing service can be VAT-exempt. Practices that charge VAT on the whole price can pay far more than they need to. Since October 2020, opticians no longer need HMRC's prior approval to use an apportionment method.
Are you paying too much tax?
Aged or discontinued stock should be valued at the lower of cost and what it would sell for, not carried at full cost forever. A proper stocktake, accurate stock values and the right VAT method can all change what you owe.
We're marketers, not accountants, and this isn't tax advice. We'll always encourage you to check your VAT method and stock valuation with an accountant who specialises in optical practices, and we're happy to introduce you to one.
Part of the optical industry, not just marketing to it
The talk of SILMO Paris 2026
Eyes for the blind. Ears for the deaf. Smart glasses are already here.
At SILMO in Paris this September, smart eyewear was everywhere. A whole day of the programme was given to smart glasses and another to training opticians in smart glasses and AI. Yet many practices still treat them as a gadget. We understand the technology, and we know how to talk to your patients about it.
Eyes for the blind
Ray-Ban Meta glasses connect to Be My Eyes, so a blind or low-vision wearer can ask a sighted volunteer to look through the camera and describe the world, hands-free. At SILMO, the iSee One, a medical device built with the blind community, showed how glasses can help wearers detect obstacles.
Ears for the deaf
Hearing glasses such as Nuance Audio amplify speech for mild to moderate hearing loss, from around £999. Caption glasses go further, showing live subtitles of a conversation on the lens. Around 18 million people in the UK have hearing loss. That is a conversation waiting to happen in your dispensary.
It belongs in your practice
Prescription lenses, fitting, adjustment and aftercare: smart glasses need an optician. SILMO’s message was “eyewear first, tech second”. We help you market them to the right patients and train your team to talk about them with confidence.

Turn local visibility into patient enquiries and appointments
Your practice may provide outstanding clinical care, excellent dispensing and a genuinely personal service. But potential patients cannot choose you if they do not understand what makes you different.
Loving Social Media helps independent opticians become more visible across social media and local search. We create useful, human content that explains your expertise, introduces your team, showcases your eyewear and gives patients a clear reason to contact your practice.
Marketing informed by real practice experience
Why Garry’s 36 years in optics matter
Loving Social Media was founded by Garry Kousoulou FBDO, a qualified dispensing optician with more than 36 years of optical-industry experience.
Garry understands the realities of running an independent practice: protecting clinical standards, managing a team, presenting frames, maintaining margins and creating a patient experience that generates loyalty and recommendations.
This means you do not have to teach your marketing agency the difference between an eye examination, a dispensing appointment, specialist lenses or an advanced clinical service. We understand optics and know how to communicate its value clearly and responsibly.

Building an independent practice from zero patients
Garry opened an independent optical practice without an inherited patient database or an established local reputation.
The practice combined strong clinical care with careful merchandising, a welcoming patient experience, local community activity and consistent communication.
The approach was not based on social media alone. It connected marketing with practice operations, team standards, patient care and commercial management.

Five things every optician should know about marketing
You already know your AR coatings from your blue-light filters, and your slit lamp from your phoropter. Here is the marketing side, explained the way one optician would explain it to another.
Your Google profile is often your real shop window
Many patients see your Google profile before they ever reach your website. The main category you choose, such as Optician or Optometrist, affects which searches you appear in. Your photos, services and how you reply to reviews do the rest.
Google Ads catch the patient who needs you today
Someone searching "eye test near me" or "dry eye clinic" already has a need. Google Ads put your practice in front of them at that moment, within the radius you choose.
Facebook ads create a need patients didn't know they had
A new frame collection, smart glasses or a myopia management clinic for children. Facebook and Instagram are where you show people something they weren't looking for, in the area around your practice.
You can't target "people with dry eye"
Meta doesn't let advertisers target people by health condition. So the ad itself has to find the right patient, through the words, the image and the problem it describes. That is where optical knowledge makes the difference.
A blog signed "Admin" carries little weight
The same myopia article written by a named optometrist or dispensing optician, with a short bio and their qualifications, shows Google and patients that a real expert is behind it. Every blog post should end with one.
I Started With Zero Patients. Here’s How I Built a Practice Turning Over £45,000 a Week.
Let me tell you something that most marketing agencies will never be able to say to you.
I’ve done it.
Not read about it. Not studied a case study from someone else’s practice. I’ve stood in an empty optical practice — brand new brand, brand new location, zero patients on the books — and built it into something that, at its peak, was turning over £45,000 a week.
That practice was mine. And the lessons I learned inside it are the reason Loving Social Media exists today.
When I opened the doors for the first time, there was no legacy to trade on. No list of loyal patients inherited from a retiring principal. No word-of-mouth head start. There was a clean, empty practice, a lot of ambition, and the absolute conviction that if I got the fundamentals right, everything else would follow.
Some of those fundamentals were tiny. Almost embarrassingly small.
The door stayed open. Not metaphorically — literally. On a high street, an open door is an invitation. A closed door is a barrier. It sounds trivial until you count how many people walk past your practice every single day without ever feeling welcome enough to step inside.
The merchandising was immaculate. Every frame in the right place, every display thoughtfully considered, every visual cue telling the patient that the people running this practice cared deeply about the details. Because patients make judgements about clinical quality based on what they can see. You may be the finest dispensing optician in the country, but if your window display is dusty and your frames are slumped at odd angles, you’ve already lost people before they’ve opened their mouth to say hello.
These things matter. They always have.
But it wasn’t just the small things that moved the needle.
I was watching the numbers constantly. Stock control. Cost management. Where the margin was leaking and where it could be recovered. I understood that a thriving practice isn’t just built on great patient experience — it’s built on running a tight, intelligent operation behind the scenes. The two go hand in hand. You cannot pour your profits into poor processes and still deliver the service your patients deserve.
And that patient experience — every single person who walked through the door had to leave feeling looked after. Not processed. Not rushed. Not sold to. Looked after. Because a patient who feels genuinely cared for doesn’t just come back. They bring their family. They mention you at work. They become, without ever being asked, your most effective marketing channel.
That is where marketing and operations become the same thing.
Which brings me to why I’m writing this blog.
I founded Loving Social Media because I wanted to bring everything I know — the 36 years in optics, the commercial reality of building a practice from the ground up, the deep understanding of what actually drives patients through the door — and put it to work for independent opticians who are ready to grow.
Yes, we know social media. We know it in detail, specifically as it applies to optical practices and healthcare brands. But we also know the wider picture. The strategy. The patient journey. The operational context that makes marketing either land or fall flat.
Over the coming posts, I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned across all of it. From building your online presence, to understanding your numbers, to making sure every touchpoint — digital and physical — is working in your favour.
If you’re an independent optician who wants more patients, a stronger brand, and a practice you’re genuinely proud of, you’re in the right place.
We know optics inside out. And we’re here to help.

Most Opticians Don’t Lack Great Clinical Care.
They Lack an Exceptional Patient Experience Combined with Marketing.
You can be the finest practitioner in the country, but if your high street presence feels closed, your online messaging is generic, and your patient touchpoints are forgotten, growth stalls.
When you get both right—an unforgettable in-practice patient experience backed by brilliant, targeted local marketing—that is when you build a £1,000,000 practice.
The Standard Practice
- Relies only on clinical reputation
- Inconsistent or generic social media
- Empty appointment slots on slow days
- Loses local patients to chain optical stores
The £1,000,000 Practice
- Seamless patient experience from screen to seat
- Dominates local search and social feeds
- Showcases premium eyewear to ideal patients
- Consistent footfall and long-term loyalty
